Our first stop on the tour was the Mia Flores Clocks (the old, original, built during the Teddy Roosevelt days.
The story of how the canal came to be is so fascinating! The more I learned about it throughout the day the more I had it confirmed to me that it was all a part of God's plan.
People has spent YEARS and DECADES trying to create a pass through Panama and every time they failed and had major trial after trial.
It wasn't until they had tried every other option they came up with the lock system, passing through the giant lake, and not simply cutting a giant gorge through the country to combine the oceans. If they had been successful with that plan, both oceans would have literally died. The plants and sea life in each ocean are unique and cannot mix. It's amazing to know the full story and how all of their hardships lead them to the correct way to pass through without harming the fragile ecosystem.
After the museum tour we had a fairly long wait to watch a ship pass through the lock system. It got a bit boring
The new Cocli locks have only been ope a year or so and they don't typically do tours. I'm not sure how we got set up to do a tour... but it was super cool and i'm really glad we did! We got there to the parking lot, just 50 yards probably from the canal edge, and we got to watch a ship completely pass through. It's crazy the elevation change they go through to pass through.
I love how the tiny little tug boats pull the massive oil ship through
Notice how much shorter the orange portion of the ship is?
Now notice how little orange is visible
our nice tour guide
Got back to our hotel room and heard a strange popping noise--- turns out we had some fireworks to view
I am so glad we were able to see the amazing and innovative world famous Panama Canal
