It was actually very special. He hadn't been responsive at all that day but as soon as we walked into his room he woke up and spent a couple minutes lucid. We were all able to tell him how much we love him and how special he was. It was especially sweet that he could tell our girls that he loved them. Everyone told us not to bring them, but we knew they needed to have the chance to say goodbye to him. We prayed about it and our decision was confirmed. This was such a sweet tender mercy.
Grandpa hung on for a few more days.... meanwhile, his nephew Coss, who has passed away the day before Grandpa started failing, had his funeral. It was almost as if Grandpa held on long enough for Coss to have his special day of tribute, and then he could go home too. He passed away on April 22nd surrounded by his children and dear, Grandma Peacock.
His viewing and funeral were beautiful. Perfect tributes to this wonderful man. (April 24th and 25th)
The hardest part was watching Adelia. Sad things like deaths bother her most and she took Grandpa's passing very very hard. She was literally hysterical during his viewing, eventually we had to take her away from the funeral home. She was better during the funeral, but it was still very hard.
Everyone did such a great job honoring him though. Luke was able to dedicate the grave. Bert (Luke's dad) and his siblings each shared memories during the funeral, and the girls of the family sang "Daddy's Hands." It was perfect.
